Women on Strike

The Antalya free trade zone, being one of the first of its kind, was established in 1987. From September 2006 until December 2007 there was a strike at the company Nova Med, a subsidiary of the German corporation Fresenius Medical Care, which was the first strike in this free trade zone.

This strike was special, as it was a women's strike. Unlike men, they have no meeting places, such as cafes, so unionists visited the women at home in order to organise them. After the strike began, repression against all union member started in the plant. But the women were convinced of the necessity of their actions and often stayed in the union even against their families wishes. The Tukish women's liberation movement and the trade union federation supported them.
