Backyard

Faridabad/Inda, June 2009 - In a backyard in a so-called industrial village in the industrial city of Faridabad (1,5 million inhabitants) south of Delhi, workers produce parts for TATA and Maruti-Suzuki. The auto industry specifically combines development and underdevelopment by producing, on one hand, in highly modern factories and, on the other hand, in backyard-sweatshop suppliers. Here people work without work safety and social insurance for wages below the minimum wage. That makes it possible to produce the TATA Nano, the cheapest car in the world.
